My birthday was yesterday and this year I found myself counting communications mechanisms people used to send me good wishes. I came up with eight:
Facebook wall posts - by far the most common. It's usually just people saying "Happy Birthday" but the numbers make it gratifying.
Facebook messages - just a couple of these but they were a little more personal.
Email - a few old school email messages
Phone call - About half went to voice mail, but nice to catch up with some friends and family. The only means that people used to sing.
Text Message - Two text messages
Instant Message - one via IM
Postal Mail - one package from my sister and her fiance
and of course, In Person is still the best.
It surprised me a little that none came through twitter, I guess they're behind facebook in the birthday wish competition.
Update: One tweet and a postcard came. :)

Add one more to that - blog comments. Happy birthday.
Happy Birthday, HM! Hope the variety of celebratory wishes hasn't become too dull just yet - but just in case it's become hard for you to get too riled up about good wishes anymore...
Speaking of things that make you say "hmmm," here find a small present I suspect you'll not want to spend too much time with: FlickChart Discussions.
