Kottke shows Hilarious recipe videos in the style of famous directors. I agree that this Tarantino one is the best. See the rest at his site.
Notes from Howard's Sabbatical from Working. The name comes from a 1998 lunch conversation. Someone asked if everything man knew was on the web. I answered "no" and off the top of my head said "Fidel Castro's favorite color". About every 6-12 months I've searched for this. It doesn't show up in the first 50 Google results (this blog is finally first for that search), AskJeeves says it's: red.

Last Night's Political Comedies
I watched a fair amount of the Jeff Sessions hearings yesterday. Samantha Bee is the only one I’ve seen report on the scariest thing I heard him say. When Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) asked if secular federal attorney’s had anything to worry about he flustered.
Whitehouse: And secular person has just as good a claim to understanding the truth as a person who is religious Sessions: Well I’m not so sure.
That’s really not out of context.
Trevor Noah had Johnathan Chait on to talk about his new book, which sounds very good.
And Jimmy Fallon had a cute segment with Michelle Obama

The Divinity of Donald Trump
Really liked this segment from last night. "Jordan Klepper speaks to Pastor Mark Burns, one of Donald Trump's religious supporters, to find out how the GOP presidential hopeful stacks up as a Christian." The best part is at the end.

Trevor Noah Does His Best Yet
I've watched all of Trevor Noah's Daily Show so far and it's just been ok. Given that John Oliver and Samantha Bee are hitting it out of the park virtually every week (though just once a week), he's probably doing better than it seems. I've been thinking of giving up my season pass and usually find he does a really good segment that gives me hope. That happened again last night. Taped before the Dallas shootings, Noah did this:
"Trevor reacts to the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, two African-American men shot by police officers, and calls on law enforcement to address systemic racism. (7:40)"
"They're making changes for a gorilla! One gorilla!"

Seth Meyers on Trump University
John Oliver and Samantha Bee have great shows, but they're only on once a week (which may be why they can do what they do). Seth Meyers might actually be the one continuing Jon Stewart's legacy.

The Religious Right - Full Frontal with Samantha Bee
Last night Samantha Bee did a great segment explaining the rise of the Religious Right. She provides context that the news doesn't (the only news show that I know does is Rachel Maddow's).

‘The Force Awakens’ Reimagined As Calvin and Hobbes
‘The Force Awakens’ Reimagined As Calvin and Hobbes Will Make Your Heart Melt "Artist Brian Kesinger from Walt Disney animation studios drew ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ in the style of Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson and it was just perfect."
His instagram and twitter accounts are the source but have other stuff. This Rickey article looks like it's being updated with new images as they come out. These two are my favorites:

The 100 Jokes That Shaped Modern Comedy
Vulture has a wonderful way to spend some time, they've compiled The 100 Jokes That Shaped Modern Comedy. Lots of video clips to watch.
A few notes on our methodology: We’ve defined ‘joke’ pretty broadly here. Yes, a joke can be a one-liner built from a setup and a punch line, but it can also be an act of physical comedy. Pretending to stick a needle in your eye, or pooping in the street while wearing a wedding dress: both jokes. A joke, as defined by this list, is a discrete moment of comedy, whether from stand-up, a sketch, an album, a movie, or a TV show.
For clarity’s sake, we’ve established certain ground rules for inclusion. First, we decided early on that these jokes needed to be performed and recorded at some point. Second, with apologies to Monty Python, whose influence on contemporary comedy is tremendous and undeniable, we focused only on American humor. Third, we only included one joke per comedian. And fourth, the list doesn't include comedy that we ultimately felt was bad, harmful, or retrograde."

Robert Redford's Gift to Paul Newman on His 50th
For my 50th I did not receive a crushed Porsche. Transcript: Robert Redford Says Goodbye to Newman
"And I said, 'Geez, can't we talk about something else?' He said, 'Well, I want to take you up to the track and we'll do this and we'll do that.' So for his 50th birthday, I happened [to be], in Connecticut, to find a trashed Porsche and it was just totally demolished and I had them wrap it up and leave it on his kitchen back step, wrapped in paper with a ribbon around it, that said 'Happy 50th.'
And so a couple weeks went by and I didn't hear anything, and then I went up to my house a couple weeks later and walked in the living room and there was this gigantic box in the living room, and it was so heavy you couldn't lift it.
In fact, it was so heavy, it had created an imprint on the floor, and this was a rented house. Well, by the time I crobarred it out, there was just this block of metal that had been taken down.
The [towing service] came and took it away ,and they said, 'This is great.' I said, 'OK, look, hang on.' And I called a friend of mine who was a sculptor in Westport.
I said, 'If I give you some material, can you create a sculpture.' He said, 'That's great, absolutely.' So these guys come take the thing over to her, and she did a sculpture. I said, 'Make it a garden sculpture.'
So she did. Had the towing guys take it to Newman's garden and just plump it there. Now, to this day, neither of us had ever spoken about that, never even -- that was -- there were many other situations like that, but that was ..."

‘Star Wars,’ if it were directed by Ken Burns
The Washington Post shows us ‘Star Wars,’ if it were directed by Ken Burns
