If you're serious about cutting the deficit, then you have to reduce spending on medicare and medicaid. You can cut the funding to those programs and just let people fend for themselves, as some Republicans want to do, or we could systematically try to address our healthcare issues. The US has a huge diabetes problem, other countries don't, so it's something we're doing. Wouldn't it be a lot cheaper to get people eating better and exercising more to prevent diseases that are preventable? This is what Michelle Obama is trying to do and why Sarah Palin is an idiot for attacking her for it.
Notes from Howard's Sabbatical from Working. The name comes from a 1998 lunch conversation. Someone asked if everything man knew was on the web. I answered "no" and off the top of my head said "Fidel Castro's favorite color". About every 6-12 months I've searched for this. It doesn't show up in the first 50 Google results (this blog is finally first for that search), AskJeeves says it's: red.

Another Reason Healthcare Costs Increase
A "diabetes belt" runs throughout the southern United States "Diabetes has reached epidemic proportions in the United States, and now we know just where the disease it at its worst: in a cluster of 644 counties in 15 largely southeastern states, making up America's 'Diabetes Belt.'"

If you're serious about cutting the deficit, then you have to reduce spending on medicare and medicaid. You can cut the funding to those programs and just let people fend for themselves, as some Republicans want to do, or we could systematically try to address our healthcare issues. Maybe it's just a coincidence, but the "belt" seems to be centered around the Coca-cola headquarters in Atlanta.
