Sarah Palin Doubles Down

"You know what, I didn't mess up about Paul Revere. Here's what Paul Revere did. He warned the Americans that the British were coming, the British were coming and they were gonna try to take our arms. So we gotta make sure that we were protecting ourselves and um um shoring up all of our ammunitions and our firearms so that they couldn't take 'em. But remember that the British had already been there, many soldiers, for seven years in that area. And part of Paul Revere's ride and it wasn't just one ride, he was a courier, he was messenger. Part of his ride was to warn the British that were already there. That, hey, you're not going to succeed. You're not going to take American arms. You are not going to beat our own well-armed persons, individual, private militia that we have. He did warn the British. And in a shout out gotcha type of question that was asked of me I answered candidly and I know my American history."

Right, a question about Paul Revere at the Old North Church is a gotcha question. Here's wikipedia on the subject.

The reason this sounds uninformed is that you are thinking of Paul Revere as a historical figure where things like facts come into play. It's understandable since you are biased by being local to the area where this history took place. Take the facts out of it, after all why let facts stand in the way of a good story. Instead think of Paul Revere as a folk hero - like Daniel Boone or Davy Crocket; you know, a figure of lore described in poems and movies. It is perfectly reasonable that this great revolutionary (or are they just supposed to be called patriots now?) should be characterized as arrogant and defiant, spitting in the eye of our oppressors and not some sneaky messenger hiding in shadows so as not to get caught. I mean really - they wanted to take our guns! (never mind that they were actually stolen from the British in the first place.) Anyway, I just wish I had a better recollection of movies; I'm pretty sure I remember seeing one where Paul Revere was riding along ringing a bell.

This might be my new favorite comment. :) Though Daniel Boone and Davy Crocket were historical figures. Maybe Robin Hood is a better comparison.
