Eric Holder letter to Mitch McConnell

Attorney General Eric Holder's letter to Mitch McConnell about charging Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab (the underwear bomber) with federal crimes as opposed to treating him as a prisoner of war. It addresses all the (stupid) questions that have been raised.

It's interesting to note that apparently, Farouk's family was approached by the FBI and agreed to speak to him about providing information on his terrorist training. It seems his family was able to convince him to cooperate and now he's provided lots of information.

It's doubtful that such an approach would even have been possible had Farouk ended up in the custody of the US Military or CIA and perhaps "tortured" or given a harsh interrogation.

It will be interesting to see if and how the White House uses farouk's case to argue against torture, not necessarily on moral or ethical grounds, but simply because torture may be less effective than softer techniques, particularly with detainees who may already be pre-disposed to talking.
