Very useful! Andrei and I started doing NYT crosswords a year ago. We feel very smart on Mon and Tue, then get progressively dumber and border on retarded on Fri and Sat. Sunday puzzle is not that hard. We worked out most of Shortz' hints in the article on our own. The hardest is to erase the word you've come to love and cherish...

My mother always did the sunday times puzzle and hated when shortz became editor. I grew up around this but was never very good. At some point in the 90s I started to try and could do mon, tue and maybe wed. Sunday I could do some but rarely could I finish it on my own. I did have to look things up in the dictionary but I was okay with that. Not speaking french, I hated when they used french words or names. There are common things you learn. A dog is usually Asta from the Thin Man series. I did get a NYT crossword puzzle book at my level and that did help a bunch, but I haven't been into it in a while. I have been doing sudoku and enjoying that.
