Notes from Howard's Sabbatical from Working. The name comes from a 1998 lunch conversation. Someone asked if everything man knew was on the web. I answered "no" and off the top of my head said "Fidel Castro's favorite color". About every 6-12 months I've searched for this. It doesn't show up in the first 50 Google results (this blog is finally first for that search), AskJeeves says it's: red.

Math Education: An Inconvenient Truth
This YouTube video boggles my mind. Is math education really this bad?
Holy crap. You're right, this is pretty mind boggling. And frightening, given my 7-year-old loves math and it's inevitable that any day now she's going to come to me for help with long division.
Ironically, I really don't remember how to do the standard division algorithm. In my own "everyday" math, I use the cluster method. Of course, I never knew it was called the cluster method.
But the multiplication is just stupid.
By the way I just learned the Mac feature where you can use Spotlight as a calculator. Very cool.
