Notes from Howard's Sabbatical from Working. The name comes from a 1998 lunch conversation. Someone asked if everything man knew was on the web. I answered "no" and off the top of my head said "Fidel Castro's favorite color". About every 6-12 months I've searched for this. It doesn't show up in the first 50 Google results (this blog is finally first for that search), AskJeeves says it's: red.

Summer's Approaching
I just saw my first Ice Cream Truck of the season :) Why do they drive around at 5:10pm? Doesn't seem like ice cream time.
The thing about 5pm is that kids are at home playing in the yard. Its almost dinner time, so they are hungry, and once one kid in the neighborhood gets ice cream then all the kids must have it, so parnts cant say no.
That's because back when you were getting ice cream from the ice cream wagon, it had to be delivered early in the day. Since, refridgeration hadn't been invented yet, all the ice cream would spoil, and therefore the ice cream man wouldn't be able to make the money he needed to keep his horse and wagon (yes, I realize that I've missed a point about being able to make ice cream without refridgeration to begin with, but the point is simply to make fun of Howard and his gray hair).
Mehmet has it right. You want the ice cream there before the kids eat dinner at the peak of hunger, otherwise they might already be full. In my neighborhood, in the city, they drive around and play that ice cream man music incessantly. It is enough to drive you mad. Our guy plays a lot of classical but it is still in a high pitched calliopesque yet electronic tooting. I am losing my sanity just recalling it.

Why 5pm? Your neighborhood is on the way home.
As if 4pm is ice cream time :)
Maybe it's the early part of the after dinner shift, on the way to the route.
