I liked this graphic from The Atlantic in March, The 12 States of America "Since 1980, income inequality has fractured the nation. Click each icon to see each of the dozen states, which counties belong to them and how median income has changed over the last 30 years."

Interesting, but not sure what to make with this type of graphic. The 12 "states" seem somewhat arbritrary: e.g. evangelical and mormon as states but not islamic, jewish, catholic,... Plus the states are different types: financial, religious, age, geographic, ... It seems by cleverly picking different states you could make the graphic say just about anything.

They also split things into 12 districts.
