I've been watching the Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearings today with Ambassador Crocker and General Petraeus. It's mostly theater. The Senators (and we) know what the truth is, and the Crocker and Petraeus are towing the administration's line. It's nice to see that even Republican Senators are asking some real questions. Digby sums up some of Biden's questions.
He got Crocker to say that al Qaeda in on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border is a bigger threat to the US than in Iraq. He hedged it saying there have been significant gains against al Qaeda in Iraq but it's still an admission that Iraq isn't the central front in the War in Terror. He also made it clear to Petraeus that any long term stay in Iraq would require the permission of Congress, though that's not Petraeus' call and it's pretty clear the current administration doesn't agree and past evidence shows Congress won't do anything about it anyway.
