Of Overhead Projectors and Planetarium Foolishness

I heard McCain complain last night that Obama "voted for … $3 million for an overhead projector at a planetarium in Chicago, Illinois.” I knew of course that it must have been a planetarium projector and those things are amazing and expensive. Nice to see Universe today clear it up: Of Overhead Projectors and Planetarium Foolishness.

"Obama's website has a list of his federal funding requests for Fiscal Year 2008, and clearly listed is 'Adler Planetarium, to support replacement of its projector and related equipment, $3,000,000,' with a description that says the 40 year old projection equipment has begun to fail and since parts are no longer available, soon students and other museum-goers will be left 'without this very valuable and exciting learning experience.' I don’t see that as 'pork barrel' funding, but an attempt to maintain a long-standing (Adler opened in 1930) and important institution in his district."

The image here isn't necessarily what this planetarium bought, but is just to give some perspective of what these things are. See The Spacewriters Ramblings for more.

Update: Gizmodo has some details on the actual projectors involved as described by gearlog which also points out, "By the way, the earmark was not approved. My friends, Adler Planetarium did not receive that money."

Well, McCain is desperate to enhance his ultra-right conservative street cred, so he's taking notes from Bush. If you're anti-science, the religious conservatives might assume you're pro-creation and believe that the bible is a literal history, accurate in every way.

Right, planetariums are evil and probably caused the financial crisis because they anger god.
