Melancholia and Tree of Life

Points of Light is a really interesting analysis of two of the more challenging films from 2011, Lars von Trier’s Melancholia and Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life. I agree with his conclusions though I didn't enjoy Melancholia. I only saw Tree of Life once and have it sitting on my TiVo, I think that second viewing is starting...

I'm not watching any more of Lars von Trier's movies after spending a wretched evening with his Dancing in the Dark. I liked his Breaking the Waves, with Emily Watson, a lot but this Dancing thing gave me one of the worst migraines of my life. I think it was with Bjork. I still have not watched all of Ingmar Bergman's movies and I prefer to see them if I am in the mood for something dark.

Yeah I'm not a fan of his either. I still have to see Breaking the Waves. I've seen a few others, and while there's some interesting things there from a cinematic point of view, I have not liked his films. Melancholia was no different. At the time I described it as "proof that adding a plot would not make Tree of Life a better movie".

I have a wishlist for Bergman on my TiVo and a few films recorded. I agree they're much much better. I'm also enjoying the Paul Newman wishlist I have, though many of his films are getting dated (too much melodrama).
