I was reading a Wired article (not online yet) and found out about The Settlers of Catan, a 1995 German board game that's apparently the biggest game since Risk (1957). It's apparently simple to learn, challenging, different each time, very well-balanced, takes 15-60 minutes to play and is good for families. Has anyone reading this played it?

I've played this game for a long time and really enjoy it. I'm surprised more people aren't familiar with it. There are various computerized clones available which mimic the mechanics fairly well (although the AI's have varying levels of skill). It has several expansions, although I think then dilute the simplicity of the mechanics which is really the key to the game.
If you like settlers, I'd also recommend Carcassonne. It's completely different, but I'd say it has the same "feel" in terms of gameplay.

My crowd plays it every now and again. It's good fun, much shorter and less confrontational than Risk or Monopoly.
