Notes from Howard's Sabbatical from Working. The name comes from a 1998 lunch conversation. Someone asked if everything man knew was on the web. I answered "no" and off the top of my head said "Fidel Castro's favorite color". About every 6-12 months I've searched for this. It doesn't show up in the first 50 Google results (this blog is finally first for that search), AskJeeves says it's: red.
As I emailed Howard earlier, I had an iPod problem that definitely isn't in the "iPod 101" category. But what I don't understand is why it's something that isn't a)documented anywhere and b)something that your run-of-the mill Apple support tech doesn't know. The short story is that my iPod would no longer sync, and my update and restore buttons were grayed out. But it would work on other computers. I figured there was a corrupt file somewhere on my Mac, but after two techs had me uninstall/reinstall iTunes and QT to no avail, they forwarded me to a "product expert" who had me search for a .KEXT files for the iPod in the system/library/extensions folder. It was missing, so he pointed me to the "combined OSX update" download from apples website, which I downloaded, installed and like magic it was working again. Why wasn't that something the front line techs could figure out????
