I really enjoyed Under Heaven by Guy Gavriel Kay- not science fiction more historical fantasy.

The Wind-Up Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi I only read the first half. A book I know I should like since it is so well written and with great ideas but didn't.

I've read For the Win by Cory Doctorow. It's about gold farmer's in video games trying to form a union, and also much more than that. All of his books are well worth reading.

Wind-Up girl by Paolo Bacigalupi is about a dystopian future run by seed corporations. It is a sprawling epic that covers all kinds of characters in this near future world and then brings them all together at the end. I had liked his short stories so I was looking forward to the book and was not disappointed. Kim, perhaps you needed to chug through to the end to get all the threads spun together.

The other books I haven't heard of but the Pratchett. Everything else looked really steampunky or urban fanstasy or a weird admixture of both.
