I personally just reconfirmed my belief in not fixing things in or around the house on my own. Please read http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/17/us/17blunders.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=don't%20do%20it%20at%20home&st=cse.
I would not let my husband to do anything of that kind either. In fact, our son is as bad as we are... Being handy is a very special gift; my friend Sande is extremely good at wiring, plumbing etc. Her father, a handyman himself, taught her all of it when she was just a little girl.
For that matter, I don't believe in learning a foreign language or playing an instrument through a tutorial either. Guess I'm getting more skeptical with age.
Growing up, my dad taught me a fair amount about simple home repair. Mostly carpentry and some simple electrical work. Also never do plumbing yourself.
