How Did You Hear?

I was walking back to my car after seeing movies today and a police car drove by, the officer had his window down, slowed down by the corner and said "Did you hear the news?" We said what news and he said Osama bin Laden is dead. The marines shot him." I'm still waiting for Obama's speech tonight to hear details.

My second thought was that Obama will now be reelected.

First saw someone's FB status. Then, since I was holding my iPad I tried to check the CNN app (wasn't up to date), the AP app (locked up) and then CNN.com (wasn't loading). While restarting the iPad I turned the tv on and got my news the old fashioned way.

I was surprised to see the big crowd gathering outside the Capitol. Personally for me it was ambit anticlimactic. After 10+ years it doesnt really change much.

I saw on twitter around 10pm last night that they was going to be a presidential address at 10:30pm. The predictions were that we got Bin Laden or we got Quaddafi(sp?). I was already in bed checking the feeds a last time, and darned if I didn't fall asleep anyway.

Around 6 am I checked twitter. Bin Laden was killed. I am glad it was the US military so there will be less uncertainty about the outcome. But subsequent reading of the really paranoid rantings of some show me to be an extremely naive optimist. At least he is now officially dead.

I think this is more symbolic rather than practical as there are still leaders of Al-Quada who are doing the real planing, but each little victory takes more energy from their movement.

Plans of succession don't always go smoothly. I'm happy that we're putting al Qaeda's to the test.
