Why There is no Catcher in the Rye Movie

Letters of Note publishes a letter from J.D. Salinger, Holden Caulfield is unactable.

I can't say I've missed the film in the slightest. The letter is a fun read, but I can't say I agree with the ideas. The wikikepdia article has more on attempted film adaptations of it.

I agree with Salinger but for a different reason. I've re-read his books recently and found his heroes sadly dated. I don't think that a today's teenager can identify with The Catcher or Seymour at all. And to me, far as I am from teenagehood, The Great Expectations' Pip is a more compelling and contemporary character than Haulden Caulfield.

I remember not really enjoying the book when I read it in school. Then again, I had a problem with a lot of things that were assigned to me to do. :)
